Firefighters still on scene of Dairy Farm fire, 24 hours later

WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - Family and friends are coming forward to help a family in Westmoreland whose livelihood was destroyed by fire Monday.

More than 24 hours after the fire started at B & K Fedor Farm on Peckville Road, firefighters were back on the scene once again. Tuesday morning they were still putting out hot spots on the rubble that was once a full barn, housing many animals for this dairy farm.

The owner of the third-generation family farm can only wait as fire crews continue to douse his crumbled barn with water.

Between 30-40 cow - more than half his entire amount of dairy cows - were killed early Monday morning when fire ripped through the barn.

Firefighters said that when they first arrived on the scene, the barn was fully engulfed in flames. Their first efforts were to save the cows - as many as they could. However, once the fire became so dangerous that it threatened the safety of the responding firefighters, the focus shifted to knocking down the blaze.

One family living near the farm has started to reach out to the rest of those living nearby, seeking donations for the family. They are just one of many people who feel as though they need to help out.

"A lot of people were stopping by here this morning giving their support to the family," Westmoreland Assistant Fire Chief Brad White said. "Some of them were farmers themselves or part of the farming community."

One farmer called it is a sad day for farmers, because now another dairy farm in Oneida County is lost.
