Manicurist turning 89 still clocking in to work every day

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - You can call her a social director, mom or grandmother. But on Tuesday, Amelia Tucci, the manicurist, was known as the birthday girl.

For all the twenty-somethings that hate getting out of bed and going to work every day, here's someone to think about. Amelia Tucci, known as "Millie" to many, punches in around 5:30 a.m. Each day at the age of 89.

"If anybody stays home all day long, they are hurting themselves because being in the public is the best thing you can do," Millie said.

This vibrant woman started working at age 18. She's worked at GE and Hamilton Digital, but now you can find her working for her daughter-in-law at Maria Tucci's salon.

"She softens the whole place up," said daughter-in-law Maria Tucci. "She loves customers. That's what she does all day long - talks. She pulls her table right up to a customer and says 'Come on, you need your nails done.' A lot of people do air brushing. She does a french mani that will knock your socks off."

"Some girls don't have any nails at all," Millie said. "And by the time they leave here, they look like they have long nails."

89 and a steady hand. Millie will be the first to tell you that she doesn't have to go to work - she wants to. But that wasn't always the case.

"My son decided to go to college and I said we need the extra cash to do that," Millie said.

It was a time when not many women worked full time. Their job was at home with the kids. Millie did both, and that was when the economy was in decent shape.

"Right now, it's been the lowest I've ever seen it," Millie said. "Before, it was booming. There would be days I'd work practically all day. Now, it's cut down...but that's understandable the way the economy is."

Amelia Tucci has been working for seven decades, and it's evident just from watching her that she has no plans of slowing down.

"Yeah," she said. "Til' the lord says 'you better go now.'"
