Little Falls residents at odds on future development

LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - The possibility of a new development in Little Falls has residents coming out and asking how a new grocery store could affect the one they already have.

A developer is said to be interested in building a grocery store at the "quarry site," but nothing is set in stone. Residents came out Thursday night to the auditorium at Benton Hall Academy discuss the future development in the city last night.

Some individuals, such as Little Falls Mayor Robert Peters, favor the quarry site. Meanwhile, others like the group "Main Street First" prefer the project "Breakground Downtown." Others worry the town can only support one store.

"If we open up a grocery store up at the quarry, we only have enough room in Little Falls," said David Van Metter of Main Street First. "We only have enough demand in Little Falls for about 20,000 square feet of grocery space, and we'll have more than double that. So, we're going to lose a grocery store. We're going to lose the Big M, probably. If we lose the Big M, we'll probably lose the shopper's square as a whole."

Van Metter said the residents he spoke with are open to development, but they want to know more details about both possible sites.
