Paterson fills top NY public safety posts

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Governor David Paterson has named new top law enforcement personnel to his administration following resignations
and an investigation into whether troopers and Paterson improperly
contacted a woman who had accused one of the governor's aides of
domestic violence.

According to the governor's office, Mary Kavaney is the new deputy secretary for public safety, Sean Byrne is acting commissioner of the Division of Criminal Justice Services and John Melville is acting superintendent of the State Police.

Kavaney, an attorney, was assistant secretary for public safety. Byrne, an attorney, has held posts for state corrections, parole and criminal justice offices.

Melville, a 29-year State Police veteran, has been its field commander since April 2008.
