Political website declares local congressional races "toss ups"

(WKTV) - Real Clear Politics, a non-partisan political blog, has declared New York State's 23rd and 24th Congressional Race as "toss ups" as voters approach the 2010 midterm elections in November.

New York's 24th Congressional Race pins incumbent Congressman Michael Arcuri (D) against opponent Richard Hanna (R). Arcuri nearly won back his seat in the 2008 election to Hanna.

Hanna announced his candidacy in January, just a day after Republican candidate Scott Brown upset Democratic candidate Martha Coakley for the Massachusetts Senate Replace to fill Ted Kennedy's seat. Analysts say this race offered Republicans hope in upcoming elections as the Democrats have had a harder-than-expected time passing legislation such as health care reform.

Richard Hanna was featured in Time Magazine in February in an article that discussed Republican candidates gaining momentum for the upcoming election season.

The 24th Congressional District includes most of Oneida County including the Cities of Utica and Rome, all of Herkimer County, most of Otsego County including the City of Oneonta and then spreads West to include the Cities of Cortland, Auburn and Geneva.

New York's 23rd Congressional Race may be making national headlines again as it is also declared a "toss up" by Real Clear Politics. Democrat Bill Owens captured the special election last November. The race became a fight over the identity of the Republican Party.

Owens defeated Conservative Doug Hoffman and Republican Dierdre Scozzafava in the heavily Republican 23rd congressional District in rural northern New York. Scozzafava abruptly withdrew right before Election Day and supported Owens, the Democrat. For the 2010 Election, Doug Hoffman has announced that he is running again.
