Residents displaced following Newport apartment fire

NEWPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - Several fire departments from Herkimer County were on the scene of a fire at 3086 Bridge Street in the Village of Newport.

Newport and Middleville firefighters were dispatched around 2:15 p.m. to the scene, finding flames visible as they arrived. They were soon assisted at the scene by Poland, Herkimer, and East Herkimer, the latter two providing aerial ladders. The fire was deemed under control just around 5 p.m.

The American Red Cross was also on the scene, helping all those displaced by the fire. Four individuals - three adults and a child - were evacuated from the building.

There is no official word just yet as to how many people total were living inside the building, which contained two separate apartments.

Herkimer County Emergency Services Coordinator Robert Vandawalker said the fire began in a wall on the second-floor of the two-story, wood-frame building.

The roof of the building had collapsed during the course of the fire.

Vandawalker said that crews had to be especially careful while fighting the fire, because of a crane in the building that weighs several tons. Vandawalker said the crane still remained in the building from a business that had previously been housed there.

Businesses on either side of the building suffered smoke and water damage in the course of the fire.
