Republican wins Cooperstown Mayoral Race

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WKTV) - Despite the cross-party endorsement of the outgoing mayor, Cooperstown's Democrat Deputy Mayor had lost his mayoral bid to a Republican.

Republican candidate Joseph D. Booan Jr won the mayoral seat with 431 votes against Democrat Jeff Katz, who brought in 329 votes. Booan will serve a two-year term as Mayor of Cooperstown.

The election results come after a race that drew a lot of interest - not so much for any one issue, but for an endorsement from the outgoing administration.

Carol Waller, the current Republican Mayor of Cooperstown, chose to not seek another term, and endorsed Democrat mayoral candidate Katz - who is the current Deputy Mayor - instead of Republican candidate Booan. The endorsement had caused quite a stir in the quiet Village of Cooperstown.

Earlier in the month, both candidates said they felt as though party endorsements would not make that much of a difference on the local level that it does at a national level. However, both agreed that the decision had spurred a lot of interest within the village - so much interest that both candidates expected voter turn out to be high.

Elections for two open village trustee spots were also held Tuesday night, with Alton G. Dunn III and Lynne Mebust winning the two positions. Dunn III ended election night with 406 votes, while Mebust brought in 370 votes. Fellow candidate Douglas B. Walker brought in 364 votes, while Sally G. Eldred had 327 votes. Both Dunn III and Mebust will serve three years in the village trustee positions.

Meanwhile, Leslie Friedman gained the Village Justice seat with 446 votes, compared to Michael R. Malloy's 277 votes. Village Justice is a four-year position.
