Red Cross assisting ten people following Utica apartment fire

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Two families are being assisted by the American Red Cross, following a fire in West Utica.

The fire was called in around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the 1439 City Street apartment building, with first responders reporting smoke coming from the first floor of the building.

Fire officials said the residence suffered a large among of smoke and water damage, resulting in the American Red Cross assisting the two families who lived there.

While no one was injured in the course of the fire, ten people in all were displaced and were receiving help from the American Red Cross.

"We are assisting and making sure they have a place to stay, and meeting their emergency needs," said a Red Cross representative.

Fire officials said the fire started in the downstairs kitchen of the building, spread up the stairs. The cause of the fire is being attributed to unattended cooking.
