Hockey sticks being recalled

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Bauer Hockey Corp. has issued a worldwide recall of about 100,000 youth and junior hockey sticks due to high lead content in the paint used on some composite sticks, as well as the shaft and blade of some two piece sticks. Some of the sticks involved in the recall were sold as long as six years ago.

Bauer has notified its American distributors that the lead level in the paint of the Nike Bauer Supreme One50 JR-52 composite stick, produced in 2006, exceeded the standards set by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

At first, only the Nike Bauer Supreme One50 JR-52 composite stick was found to be of a concern, according to a random test conducted by Health Canada. Bauer then conducted their own tests of other sticks sold by the company and found lead levels that were a concern in 12 other products.

The company says that Bauer sticks currently being sold meet the lead paint level restrictions of both the U.S. and Canada. The sticks that are of concern were sold in North America between 2004 and 2009.

According to an article in the Toronto Star, the following Chinese made sticks are being recalled in Canada:
Nike Bauer Supreme One90 youth and junior stick, including shafts and replacement blades.
Nike Bauer Supreme Junior One50 junior stick, including shafts and replacement blades.
Nike Bauer Supreme One40 junior stick.
Nike Bauer Supreme One70 junior stick.
Nike Bauer/Bauer Supreme One75 junior player and goalie stick.
Nike Bauer/Bauer Vapor XX junior player and goalie stick.
Nike Bauer Supreme LTX junior stick.
Nike Bauer Apollo junior stick.
Nike Quest Apollo junior blade.
Nike Bauer Supreme Force junior stick.
Nike Bauer Vapor XVI junior stick.
Nike Bauer Vapor XXX Lite "Woody" junior stick.
Nike Bauer Supreme Accel junior stick.

In that same article, any one who purchased one of these sticks have been instructed to call 1-888-734-0443 to arrange an exchange of the product.

Many of the sticks on the list are no longer in production. Bauer lists only the Nike Bauer and Bauer Supreme One75 as being a current product of the company.

Bauer issued a stop sale notice for the Nike Bauer Supreme One50 JR-52 composite stick only on March 5, 2010. A copy of that notice is posted on the minnesotahockey.org website. The notice posted is what was sent out by Bauer to American distributors.
