State Conservatives meet on governor's race

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Leaders of the state Conservative Party are meeting in Brooklyn to discuss the party's important endorsement of
a candidate for governor.

Three Republicans in the race are seeking the Conservative Party's backing. They are former congressman Rick Lazio, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Buffalo developer Carl Paladino.

Conservative support has been essential for Republicans running statewide in New York where Democrats have a nearly 2:1 enrollment
advantage.

The closed-door meeting is being run by state Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long.

The leaders could decide to postpone an endorsement.

All three candidates say they expect to be in a Republican primary this fall.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce his Democratic bid soon.
