Oneonta falls in state final again

TROY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Oneonta Lady Yellowjackets fell short in their quest for a Class B State Title after losing to Irvington 54-33 on Saturday at HVCC in Troy. Tara Gableman led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points.

The Lady Yellow Jackets started off well leading 11-6 at one point in the first quarter. However, Irvington went on a 15-3 run to end the half and never looked back. "I'm glad we made it this far, we grew as a team, we grew as players individually and I'm really proud of the team and what we accomplished," said senior center Val Ridgway, who led the Lady Yellow Jackets with 8 points and 11 rebounds.

It's the second straight year Oneonta has fallen short in the title game, and making it this year may have been even bigger this time for the girls, because they had a lot more hype as an undefeated finalist last season. "The beginning of the year no one knew how good we were going to do, because we lost the two seniors, but we all worked hard and got back to the championship game again," said junior guard Sienna Wisse.

"I'm proud of everyone, I love everyone on my team, I'm going to miss it so much. But it's a great experience and I'm going to look back on this and I'll be happy, but right now it's kind of hard," added senior guard Lesley Harlem.

Head Coach Bob Zeh put the game in perspective for his team, saying after the loss, "To get to the final four is unreal and unbelievable. I told them we could've got beat by Lansing. We were down 1 with 14 seconds to go and we pulled that out, that could've been three weeks ago. I'm proud of them, the kids are resilient, they'll bounce back."

Oneonta finishes their season 20-4 overall.
