Agriculture issues discussed at Herkimer summit

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - An agriculture summit was held at Herkimer County Community College on Thursday to help local farmers during these tough times.

In addition to providing information on resources, farmers broke into groups to discuss relevant topics in the industry - the price of milk being one of the biggest problem these days.

The summit provided ideas on cutting costs, with suggestions such as a windmill on the farm to help cut back on electricity costs. Organizers hoped each farmer will apply at least one thing they learned.

"We've got New York State agriculture markets coming in," said Herkimer County Legislature Bernard Peplinski. "They're going to talk about local promotions and local marketing. We have USDA talking about energy and saving on the cost of energy."

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, New York Agri-development Corporation and Herkimer County IDA are just some of the other agencies that participated in Thursday's summit.
