NY Senator Espada down but not out in probe of clinic

NEW YORK (AP) - New York Senator Pedro Espada says he grew up fighting, constantly scrapping with bigger guys.

The poor kid from Puerto Rico has thrived ever since. With a keen intellect and uncanny political acumen, he has left a trail of political opponents on the canvas.

Now he's squaring off against the most powerful fellow Democrat in New York - Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. And he faces scrutiny from the FBI and Internal Revenue Service.

Cuomo says Espada has siphoned $14 million from his shabby government-funded health care clinic in the Bronx for himself and relatives. Federal agents have raided the clinic as part of a criminal investigation.

But Espada tells The Associated Press that he's "unafraid."

He says he has disciplined himself not to fear bigger opponents.
