WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - The American Heart Association raised $57,000 for the fight against heart disease on Wednesday.

The funds were raised at the annual Go Red for Women luncheon held Wednesday afternoon at Harts Hill Inn in Whitesboro.

The goal was to raise $42,000, but the 450 people in attendance blew that number away. Sponsors purchased tables and individuals bought tickets to show their support for the American Heart Association and the work they do.

"Each year we hear that heart disease is the leading cause of death in women over the age of 25," said Mary Kate Hartmann, Director of Communication for the American Heart Association. "All the women, and men who are here today are showing their support of us by attending today's luncheon and hearing survivors speak and educational materials."

The proceeds go for education and research on heart disease and stoke.
