Local businesses split on Turning Stone's new liquor license

VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New York State Liquor Authority's decision to allow alcohol on the gaming floor of the Turning Stone Resort and Casino is not good news for everyone in Central New York.

The General Manager at Vernon Downs, Scott Frayman, said Thursday night more though should have gone into the decision.

"I am disappointed in the outcome of this decision, not enough analysis was done on the situation and its economic impact," Frayman said.

Still Frayman insists it's still business as usual at Vernon Downs.

Vernon Downs minority owner Gary Greenberg, says the new license puts his business at a disadvantage.

"We've faced great odds and we're trying our best to overcome them," Greenberg said. "We don't need to have any more disadvantages."

CD Food and Beverage will have to pay sales tax on anything they sell at the resort.

The attitude is more optimistic a stones throw away from the Turning Stone, at a bar called The Recovery Room. Jill Mcallister used to work at Turning Stone, now she's the Assistant General Manager at The Recovery Room.

Mcallister isn't phased by Turning Stone's new status.

"Honestly I don't think its going to affect us much at all," Mcallister said. "We're a restaurant first and the bar is secondary. The Recovery Room's atmosphere is different and it's unique characteristics set it apart from what customers look for when the head to Turning Stone."
