Passenger train hits debris on railway, swipes CSX train

By ANDREW DONOVAN

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Hazmat teams spent the day Sunday cleaning up a train accident that occurred Sunday afternoon between a CSX train and an Amtrak passenger train with about 100 people on board.

Around 12:15 p.m., the Amtrak train reportedly hit debris on the track that caused it to swipe the side of a passing CSX train. One passenger said, "On the other side of the track there was a maintenance car that was going by us, and something must have hit, something sticking out of that train must have hit the engine or something like that."

According to the Whitesboro Fire Department, no injuries were reported and all passengers were transported from the scene back to Union Station in Utica.

Hazmat teams were on the scene of the accident because of concern that some diesel fuel spilled. There were initial reports that hundreds of gallons of fuel has spilled onto the tracks.

Amtrack officials say the passenger train, Amtrak number 63, was traveling north from New York City to Toronto. Trains in the area were delayed as crews worked to clean up the tracks.

Police and fire agencies from Whitesboro and Oriskany responded to the accident.
