NY shut down would hit New Yorkers in all over

By By the Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - With the state budget more than two months late and continued discord in Albany, the fear of an unprecedented shut down of state government is getting more attention among state planners.

A shut down would likely mean a fraction of the number of troopers patrolling highways and investigating crimes; the end of a terrorism hot line that takes about 457 calls a year; delayed tax refunds; suspension of lottery games; and closed unemployment offices just when the state is hovering around its highest unemployment rate in decades.

That's the snapshot from planners in the state Senate after meetings with the Paterson administration.
