Three in custody, after a Utica Police Officer was assaulted Wednesday

Three people are now in custody, after a Utica Police Officer was assaulted Wednesday. The third arrest was made on Thursday.

The latest arrest in the case is 17-year-old Hector McCain. He and 17-year-old Darnell Howard, both of Utica, face a variety of charges ranging from criminal mischief to assault.

Also in custody is a 14-year old, who's been turned over to family court.

Officer Dzenan Sabanovic is still being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Sabanovic just graduated from the Mohawk Valley Police Academy in March.

Three men jumped Sabanovic after he was flagged down by the owner of the James Street Market to assist with criminal mischief. According to police, those three men then jumped him and assaulted him.

Officer Sabanovic suffered a fractured nose, among other minor injuries; UPD expects a full recovery
