Comment about AT&T shooting prompts Verizon to post armed guard

By WKTV News

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - An armed guard is now stationed at the Verizon store on Commercial Drive near Henderson Street in New Hartford.

The assignment of a guard is the result of a comment an angry customer made at the Verizon store on June 5, 2010, referencing the fatal shooting at the AT&T Wireless store just up the road a few weeks prior.

New Hartford Police investigated the complaint, and say Verizon's corporate office chose not to press charges against the customer, but are considering banning him from the store.

Police believe that's the only local Verizon store with an armed security guard.

No other local Verizon stores have armed security, and Verizon officials say the guard will be gone from the Commercial Drive store on Friday, June 18, calling the measure only temporary.

The new AT&T store, will open next Thursday, June 24, in Consumer Square.
