Historic home of signer of Declaration of Independence up for auction...starting at a dollar

WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - For the right price, a piece of history could soon be yours.

A "For Sale" sign at 9102 Main Street in Westernville, is a first. The house has been in the same family for 180 years, all the way back to when General William Floyd built it.

General William Floyd was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The 15 room home sits on 1.7 acres, but for just $2 a ticket, the house is being shown to potential buyers and curious neighbors, and that money is all being donated to the Westernville Fire Department.

The house has stayed in General William Floyd's family for five generations. However, now the owners are putting it up for auction, because no one wants it as their main residence and it's too expensive to keep.

You don't have to be a millionaire to move in to a home fit for a general. While the home is assessed at $100,000, the bidding starts at just $1 Saturday at 10 a.m.

Bernard Brzostek is auctioning off the property, calling it priceless for the right owner.

"There's only four signers of the Declaration from New York State, and the general was one of them," Brzostek said. "How many families would have hung on to these things through generations? Very few. I mean, this is probably the only one that would have hung on for 180 years' time. "

If you're not in the market for a new home, you might consider the contents inside.

Everything is being sold, from the quill holder used to hold the quill General William Floyd used to sign the Declaration of Independence, to a snuff box given as a gift by Benjamin Franklin.

The house was originally built in 1830 for just $2,000, but family members hope that it will fetch much, much more than that Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
