State Budget closer to passage

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The state Legislature has begun passing a state budget, but Governor David Paterson is threatening a veto.

The plan would impose a smaller cut in aid to public schools, eliminate a sales tax exemption on clothing and increase the tax credit for movie and TV productions that film scenes in New York.

A cap on property taxes is not in the bill, according to State Senator Carl Kruger, the chairman of the finance committee. Kruger said there is 6% increase in spending over what Governor Paterson originally proposed.
