Senate to take first vote on new tax and fee plan
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York's state Senate is planning to take
the first crack at the final element of the 2010-11 state budget. That would make the spending plan exactly three months late. The Democrat-controlled Senate plans to take up the tax, fee and other revenue raising bill in the state budget as soon as midnight Wednesday night. That would be the earliest lawmakers could take action because a bill needs to be publicly available for three calendar days after it is introduced, unless the governor declares it must be voted on immediately. Whether the Senate holds a midnight session hadn't been decided by late Wednesday afternoon. But good-government groups are already berating the idea of voting on taxes in the dead of night. The Assembly plans to vote on the revenue bill Thursday, during the day. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
