City of Utica looking to create official themed districts to help bring in cash
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Utica City Councilman senses a theme, or, several, throughout the city, and he sees it as a way to not only foster community spirit, but to bring the city cash.
Councilman Joe Marino says the governor has made grants available to cities with municipal 'themed' districts. As Marino points out, some such districts have already emerged in the city. But making them official and making more of them can mean state grants for the city.
"The Stanley and Munson Williams Proctor, that's generally accepted as the arts district. The brewery district is generally accepted as an entertainment area so we're going to take those current ones and nurture them and put them on paper officially and throughout the city we're going to try and map out other themed districts. It just helps with grants," says Marino.
The councilman believes there is support on the council to pass his legislation declaring municipal themed districts. There will be a meeting at which the topic will be addressed Tuesday, October 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall. The public is welcome to attend.
