Driver charged with DWI after accident that closes Westmoreland road

WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - A portion West South Street in the Town of Westmoreland was closed to traffic early Tuesday morning after an accident that sheared a telephone pole in half. .

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department says the accident happened sometime before 12:30 am,

They say Ethan McKinstry, 26, of Westmoreland left the scene of the accident. They noticed front-end damage to his pickup truck at the Nice N Easy Grocery Shop on West Main Street and Route 233.

When deputies questioned McKinstry about the damage, they learned of the hit and run accident and were able to link McKinstry's truck to the accident.

They say he was heading east on West South Street and lost control of his vehicle, and struck a pole shearing it in half. The pole remained across the roadway making it impossible for plows and drivers to get through, but McKinstry was able to regain control and keep on driving according to deputies.

He is charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to keep right, and for not wearing his seat belt.
