Almost two dozen trucks destroyed in Whitesboro fire

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - State fire investigators have joined investigators from the Oneida County Sheriff's Department to determine the cause of the massive fire late Wednesday night that destroyed a storage building at Burrows & Sons Trucking & Excavating.

It took firefighters from six departments to get the fire under control. It happened around midnight, and flames were already shooting from the building when firefighters first arrived on the scene. One Burrows employee hit and cut his head while trying to move vehicles from an adjacent building in case the fire spread.

Officials with the Oneida County Sheriff's Department say there were 23 dump trucks in the burning building. That could account for explosions heard by witnesses up to a mile and a half away.

"Oh, you could hear them back in Whitesboro 'popping,' 'popping'....all the way back to Whitesboro off of Westmoreland," said Marcie Price.

Oneida County Undersheriff Peter Paravati says investigators are just beginning the investigation and he expects to release more information later Thursday afternoon.
