American Red Cross announces 2012 Great Heroes Award Recipients

UTICA, N.Y. - Officials, volunteers and friends of the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley gathered at the agency's Utica office to announce the recipients of their 2012 Great Heroes Awards.

The winners were selected from nominations made by the community and will honored at the 15th Annual Great Heroes Breakfast presented by GPO Federal Credit Union on March 15 in the Robert McLaughlin Campus Center at Herkimer County Community College.

The 2012 Great Heroes Awards & Recipients are:

Emergency Responder Award - Whitesboro Fire Department

Mary Haggerty Educator Award - Karen Anderson

Clara Barton Award - Clare Lidano

Blood Services Award - Joanne McShane

Youth Leadership Award - T.R. Proctor High School Navy JROTC

Military Award - Dennis Thorp & Michael Sportello

The seven recipients join two other Great Heroes Award winners which were announced previously.

Kevin Crosley of HARC will receive the 2012 Great Heroes Individual Award and Bonide Products Inc.of Oriskany will receive the 2012 Great Heroes Corporate Award.

"We are pleased and excited about the 2012 Class of Great Heroes." said Victor Fariello, Community Chapter Executive for the American Red Cross. "With the community's help we are ready honor these fine individuals and organizations for all they do every day to enhance the quality of life in the Mohawk Valley," Fariello added.

The event is presented by GPO Federal Credit Union. Other Major Sponsors are NBT Bank, Skinner & Damulis, Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield. The Polish Community Home is the Matching Gift Sponsor for the event.

The public is invited to attend the Great Heroes Breakfast on March 15 in the Robert McLaughlin Campus Center at HCCC.

The breakfast is 7:15 - 8 a.m. and the program is 8 - 9 a.m. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling the Red Cross at 733-4666.

Ticket purchases and donations can be sent to the American Red Cross, 1415 Genesee Street, Utica, NY 13501. Please indicate Heroes Breakfast" on the check.

The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley covers Oneida, Herkimer and Otsego Counties. There are offices in Rome, Utica, Herkimer and Cooperstown.
