Annual Bike Rodeo at Mohawk American Legion highlights safety

By WKTV News

MOHAWK, N.Y. (WKTV) - It was all about bicycle safety in the Village of Mohawk on Saturday as the Mohawk Fire Department and Mohawk American Legion Post 25 held its annual Bike Rodeo at the Legion on West Main Street.

Obstacles were set up for the kids to bike through while the youngsters were also taught about all aspects of safety.

Children even had the chance to win a brand new bike, but organizers say this event has become more than just about bikes.

"This year, we've added on the State Police roll-over simulator so they can learn the importance of seat belt safety," said Mohawk Firefighter and Event Coordinator Bernie Sommer. "We also have a gal from the Mohawk Valley Community Action teaching car seat installation, making sure they are properly installed so, trying to make it more than just bikes, to make it more well rounded."

A total of more than 60 kids turned out for the rodeo.
