Attrition has helped Richfield Springs School District avoid layoffs
RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. (WKTV) - With less than a week to go until school budget votes, the Richfield Springs School District does not have a whole lot to talk about when it comes to controversy.
Superintendent Robert Barraco did not have to engage in the mathematic gymnastics so many other districts have had to do such as cutting jobs, cutting programs and spiking taxes.
Attrition, or not replacing retiring employees over the past several years, has helped the Richfield Springs School District sidestep layoffs. With no job loss, program loss or giant tax hike, passage of the budget might seem almost guaranteed, but the superintendent says he never assumes anything.
"It doesn't have a major impact on any program or staffing per se, so will we get a significant positive vote by the people in the district? Will they come out? We hope so," Barraco said.
One other thing that gives the superintendent pause is the defeat of two recent propositions for district projects that would have had no tax impact.
