ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - The autopsy results have been released, revealing the cause of death for the Ilion man involved in the fiery standoff on Monday night.

According to police, Gene Wedemeyer, of 60 High St., died of asphyxia from smoke inhalation.

The incident began with a 911 call to report a domestic dispute, and upon arrival, police found Wedemeyer barricaded in the house, throwing Molotov cocktails and a hammer at officers, injuring two.

Following the standoff, he then set fire to the house at around 2 a.m.

Ilion Police Chief, Tim Parisi, said that investigators are still taking statements from people, and trying to determine what caused Wedemeyer to snap.

Parisi also said that, just as they do with any critical case, they will review their own response to examine whether they could have done anything differently to resolve the situation.
