Bassett volunteers honored for service

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - Hospitals depend on their volunteers to fully function on a day-to-day basis.

So on Wednesday, Bassett Medical Center said thank you to the 150 people who dedicate their time for free.

The volunteers were treated to lunch at the Otesaga hotel in Cooperstown and were honored both by Bassett and reality TV's "The Beekman Boys."

Paul Kuhn is a volunteer who brings communion to sick patients. He says it feels wonderful to be recognized for his work and contribution to the hospital.

"Health care would be a lot more expensive without volunteers," said Kuhn. "You can see how many people are here. We maintain all kinds of functions. Without us, they'd have to hire someone, so the cost of health care for everyone, I think, every hospital, depends very much on volunteers."

The volunteers provide more than 15,000 hours of service to Bassett Medical Center each year.
