(WKTV) - Shawn "Big Sexy" Smith of Utica finally made his appearance in the battle rounds of "The Voice" Tuesday night, but won't make it any further in the singing competition.

Smith and Jonny Gray faced each other in the battle round, singing Tom Petty's "Refugee." While judge Blake Shelton offered big praise for Smith, judges Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera put their support behind Gray. Ceelo Green, whose team Smith was on, ultimately picked Gray to move forward.

Before Tuesday night's performance, Smith was profiled and his story of serving in the Iraq war was told. Also revealed was that Smith lost some of his hearing in one of his ears when a bomb went off near him in Iraq.

"You command me," Ceelo said in regards to Smith's performance. "You make me feel a part of something larger than the both of us."

Smith thanked Ceelo for his guidance.
