Father, two sons die in boating accident on Oneida Lake

ONEIDA LAKE, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Oneida County Sheriff's Department confirms that three bodies have been recovered in Oneida Lake following a massive overnight search.

The bodies of a father, Anthony Aceto, 66, of Utica and two of his sons - Stephen Aceto, 41, of Tampa, Florida and Timothy Aceto, 33, of Deerfield - were pulled from the waters Friday morning, following large search that began late Thursday night after a boat they were on struck some rocks near Buoy 113.

Crews had rescued another son - Anthony J. Aceto, 39, of Whitesboro on Thursday night, who told them that his siblings and father were on the boat with him. That's when authorities began searching for the family. Several departments were on the scene and helicopters lit up the water so that rescue and dive teams could search for the men.

Anthony J. Aceto was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica with broken shoulders and ribs.

The bodies of the deceased were found at 7 a.m. Friday morning.

"It's a difficult part of the lake where it actually can go from about between 15 to 20 feet down to less than a foot in some spots," said Rick Johnson, Sylvan Beach 2nd Assistant Fire Chief. "And there are quite a few special buoys and markers in that area to notify boaters of that. So, I mean, that's an area where we've had problems in the past often due to the severity, we've often had people who are unfamiliar with the territory in that location."

Authorities say the boat the men were on did have a light on it, but are not sure if that light was on at the time of the accident. They also say that the men were not wearing life jackets.

The investigation is continuing into what caused the crash.

Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol said crews expect to pull the boat out of the water as soon as possible and as that as the investigation continues, that onlookers stay away to give authorities space to do what they need to.
