UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Boilermaker officials are stepping up to make sure this year's race runs smoothly. After steep cuts to the public safety departments there was concern about staffing throughout the city during the big event. Boilermaker officials handed over a check for $10,000 Thursday evening to help cover the costs of overtime.

The presentation took place at Aqua Vino's in North Utica. Mayor Robert Palmieri says he appreciates the help and is looking forward to this year's race. "There's a lot of money that is expended with the overtime. You're talking about the greatest road race in the United States and you're talking about tens of thousands of people coming here so there is an added expense that goes on and this will help us tremendously as far as the overtime for the police department," said Palmieri.

The Executive Director of the race, Tim Reed, said he met with Mayor Palmieri several months ago to talk about how the committee can help cover the costs for the city that keeps the race alive. "This is the city of our birth. This is the city that has supported us and the vast majority of the 9.3 miles that we run are run through the City of Utica. The post-race party that takes place takes place in the City of Utica," said Reed.

Boilermaker Sunday is July 8th. Both races are at capacity.
