ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Bronx man was arrested on drug charges following a joint narcotics investigation between the Oneonta Police Department and the Otsego County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division.

On June 8, Oneonta Police say they received information that Roberto Ayala, 21, was staying in a motel on Southside State Route 23 in Oneonta and was involved in drug activity. The Police Department contacted the Otsego County Sheriff's Office with the information.

Surveillance and interviews were conducted by the authorities and a no-knock search warrant for Ayala and his motel room was signed by a Town of Oneonta Judge late in the evening on June 8.

Shortly before 2 a.m. on June 9, the Oneonta Police Department and Otsego County Sheriff's Office executed the search warrant on Ayala's motel room. During the investigation, authorities say twenty packets of heroin, approximately two grams of marijuana and $1,018 in cash were seized.

Ayala was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana by the Sheriff's Office, arraigned, and remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $15,000 bail returnable this week in the Town Court.

If convicted, Ayala faces up to nine years in prison.
