CNY SPCA seize 55 cats from Utica home

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - More than 50 sickly and unfriendly cats were taken out of a home on Gilbert Street in Utica on Friday.

It's the result of an investigation by the Central New York SPCA, with the Utica Police Department offering assisting.

Authorities say Joyce Lazario, 65, was hoarding the 55 cats. She was removed from the home and sent to the hospital from an evaluation.

The codes department had no choice but to shut down the house.

"Filthy conditions...feces all over, urine all over the floors...saturated in the floors," said Paul Morgan, the executive director of CNY SPCA. "Feces and urine on the bed where she sleeps. Couches, name it. It's quite a mess."

Lazario is not allowed to live in the home until it's cleaned up and meets codes. No word yet on what charges will be filed.
