By ANDREW DONOVAN

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A firework handler was killed after a firework accident took place during the annual Christmas on Main Street event, according to the Utica Police Department.

Authorities say 56-year-old John Hatter of Canastota succumbed to his injuries at Albany Medical Center. He was airlifted there after originally being sent to St. Elizabeth Medical Center

Hatter is an employee of the American Fireworks Company. The company is based on Elizabeth Street in Utica and claims to be one of the largest firework display companies in the Northeast.

An investigation into the incident is taking place but police say that it appears to be an accident.
