Canstruction a smashing success at Sangertown Mall

By WKTV News

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Hundreds attended an International Hunger Campaign event at the Sangertown Square Mall, Sunday.

"Canstruction" had locals turning canned goods into works of art, in order to aid those in the Mohawk Valley who are in need.

The event collected more than three tons of food for local veterans, and approximately 8,500 cans were donated for the drive.

Participates were required to bring at least 500 cans to the event in order to complete each structure, with the cans being donated to the Utica Food Bank and Feed our Vets Food Pantry afterwards.

"The main thought process behind the Canstruction event is to have continued awareness in the fight against hunger," said Canstruction chairman, Dan Berkhoudt. "We offer things about food pantries and homeless and hungry around Thanksgiving and Christmas, and this we do in April to continue the effort and keep that spotlight for the hungry."

Awards were handed out at the event and are listed below:

  • Hannaford Supermarket - Best Labels Award

  • Sodexo - Best Meal Award

  • Zion Lutheran Church - Juror's Favorite, People Choice Award, Structural Ingenuity Award
