One pedestrian killed, another critically injured after being hit by car

KIRKLAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - One person is dead and another is hospitalized with critical injuries after an elderly driver hit them with his car on Route 12B, according to New York State Police.

The accident happened shortly after 12:00 noon near the intersection of Route 12B (Utica Road) and Limberlost Road.

State Police say that the car was driving south when it hit the two people walking south on the road's shoulder. One of the victims was sent down an embankment, according to eyewitnesses on the scene.

Personal belongings were scattered in the roadway, also according to eyewitnesses.

Both people were sent to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for treatment of possible head injuries. One victim was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other was transported to Upstate Medical Center and is in critical condition.

Police would not release the identities of those involved, but the victims do live locally.

The elderly driver was not injured. Charges are pending following an investigation.
