Cardiovascular disease higher locally than elsewhere in state

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Oneida, Herkimer, and Montgomery counties all had higher rates of cardiovascular in recent years according to hospital discharge rates.

We talked to experts at the Oneida County Health Dept. to find out why.

Is it age distribution, how we eat, our level of physical activity?

The answer is unclear. It could be all of the above.

One issue does stand out: obesity.

Ken Fanelli of the Oneida County Health Department, said, " It's a serious issue because obesity is a factor in so many other chronic illnesses, diabetes, asthma various types of cancer and of course heart disease, cardiovascular disease."

He also says socio-economic factors could be involved.
