CARTHAGE, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Jefferson County woman has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a six-month old girl.

According to New York State Police, Amber K. Simpson, 25, of Carthage has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and is currently in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $30,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond.

State Police did not release details about how the child died or the relationship with Simpson, but the Watertown Daily Times reports that sources say the child was her niece.

The death is said to have occurred at Simpson's apartment on North School Street in Carthage prior to the arrival of police and ambulance around 8:59 p.m. Tuesday night, the Times reports.

Simpson's landlady told the Times that Simpson had custody of her niece, Rachel. The landlady also told the Times that Simpson, a native of Indiana, was unemployed and sharing an apartment with a man named Joseph Reape since September 2009. They report Simpson and Reape also had two children of their own.

A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Village of Carthage Police Department regarding the arrest.
