Cause of fire that killed Richfield Springs teacher ruled accidental

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A malfunction in the electrical system has been ruled the cause of the fire in Richfield Springs that killed teacher Mary Weingates, the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services announced Monday.

The fire occurred Nov. 16 at 42 Walnut St. in the Village of Richfield Springs. Weingates died of smoke inhalation in the blaze.

The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services and NYS Office of Fire Privation and Control Fire Investigators reviewed events before the fire and eliminated other fire causes.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and happened because of a malfunction within the electrical system in the rear of the home. Because of the location, the fire burned unnoticed before spreading to adjoining rooms.
