Chadwicks resident: "I've never seen anything like this"

CHADWICKS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Even though the flood water is gone, damage in Chadwicks as a result of the storms from Hurricane Irene is here to stay.

The 40-50 mph winds that swept through the area on Sunday caused extreme flooding, submerging some of the area in 6-18 inches of water. On Elm Street in Chadwicks, one resident, Pat Ome, was evacuated on Saturday, and then came home Sunday to find her truck nose-first into the creek behind her home.

"I was just in shock, I've never seen anything like this," Ome said. "Who would have expected a hurricane to come in here and wipe us out. You see about floods and hear about floods, but you never expect it to be in your own backyard."

Another Elm Street resident, David Shepherd, we spoke with said he had three feet of water in his basement Sunday. His washer, dryer, boiler, and hot water heater was completely submerged.

"I have been living on this street since 1996 and have never had a drop of water in my basement until now," Shepherd said.

Mud now covers the areas in Shepherd's basement that were completely submerged in water on Sunday. He is hoping his appliances dry out so he does not have to spend thousands of dollars to replace them.

We spoke with workers for the town of New Hartford who were on the scene working on clean-up efforts. They say they are working as quickly as they can to clean up gravel and debris displaced by the storm.
