By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Students at Thomas R. Proctor High School are grieving the loss of a 10th grade classmate who was shot dead in the Bronx late Monday night.

According to reports out of New York City, a man wearing a ski mask shot Justin Williams, 16, of Utica in the stomach Monday night at Brook Ave and East 143rd Street around 11:40 p.m. The masked gunmen fled the scene and is still being sought by authorities.

Williams had enrolled at Proctor High School last year and was currently a sophomore, Principal Steve Falchi said. According to Falchi, the students were trying to continue on with their daily routines and responsibilities while coping with the loss of their classmate.

"The students are doing the best they can under the circumstances and we stand by to help them if they need it," Falchi said.

Falchi said that the school has social workers who work right at the school who have been helping any students who need help dealing with the incident, as well as a bereavement counselor who has been brought in to help students deal with the loss.

New York City media outlets report that Williams was with his brother and a friend at the time of the shooting, neither of which were hurt. Williams was believed to be in the city visiting his grandparents, NYC media reports.

Authorities are investigating a motive for the shooting.
