Clean, Green initiative comes to Oneida, Herkimer counties

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WTKV) - The president of the national organization, Keep American Beautiful, is bringing the initiative home to the Greater Utica Region this spring!

Matt McKenna, brought his clean, green message to the Oneida Herkimer Recycling Center in Utica Tuesday. The Great American Cleanup begins April 1st, and you too, can get involved.

McKenna said Central New Yorkers have a gem when it comes to recycling right in our own back yard.

"The new recycling center here is an investment by the community toward a world class recycle facility ."

At a press conference at the recycling center, McKenna scolded people who take the idea of recycling lightly.

"People say they're just going to 'throw it away,'" he said. "There's no place that's 'away.' It goes some place. If you just put trash in the garbage bin, it ends up in a landfill some place."

The Great American Cleanup, as it's called, involves more than 7 million people from different communities with one common goal: to improve their communities.

It kicks off April 1st and last through the end of May.

For an idea of what to expect before and after the cleanup?

"Before the Great American Cleanup comes to town, you may see a lot of litter, you may see not see many gardens developed," McKenna said. "After the Great American Cleanup, you may see more gardens, trees planted, and more vibrant communities."
