Cleaning Utica through works of art

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Cornerstone Church in Utica is cleaning up the litter problem in Oneida Square, Thursday, and they're doing it with art.
Six members of the public submitted sketches and artist Kathy Marsh turned them into mosaics on four trash cans.
The new pieces of environmentally friendly art will be placed in front of the church, the Tram cafe,  and City Gym.
They hope that by creating something eye-catching, people will be more likely to place their trash in the barrel instead of on the street.
"This is an area that's been considered a broken neighborhood and has a bad reputation," said Marsh. "Part of the mosaic is that you're taking broken pieces of things that would be thrown away and making something beautiful out of them; Utica has a lot of potential to be extremely beautiful."
They are currently working on making two more trash cans to put around the city.
