UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - With continuous snow fall in the forecast, you're probably going to find yourself shoveling... a lot.
Utica Fire Fighters say it would be a tremendous help to them, if after you're done shoveling the side walk and driveway, to shovel out and wipe off fire hydrant's around your home.
Utica Fire Fighters make multiple rounds cleaning off fire hydrants from nine in the morning until four in the evening.
" It would be helpful for the public to clear hydrants for a few reasons," said Gerald Foster, Fire Marshall for the Utica Fire Department. "It gives access to the fire department so we can put fires out a lot quicker and if a fire fighter is stuck at a hydrant clearing it, it takes more man power away from fighting the fire so its imperative that people help clean fire hydrant."
If a hydrant is snow covered, and fire officials are battling a blaze, it normally takes three to four fire fighters to clean and access the hydrant.
It is recommended to clear a 360 degree circle around the hydrant, about a foot to a foot and a half.
