Committee aims to put students at Herkimer BOCES on the right job track

(WKTV) - A new committee is aiming to align students at Herkimer BOCES with jobs that may open in the future.

The 19-member committee is made up of local business leaders, including Sherry DePerno at Advanced Tool. She says the goal is to teach students the skills local businesses are looking for, instead of them getting a degree for a job they can't find.

DePerno says the shadow programs don't do enough. The readiness initiative would train the student as if he or she were a new employee.

"I had voiced my opinion on there being a disconnect between industry and manufacturing in the sense that I see high unemployment numbers, but I can't find the people that I need for the jobs I do have available," she said.
