Concerned parents breathe sigh of relief at Davis Motel decision
By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The new owner of a local motel with a tragic past has come forward to put at ease the fears of some local parents about his intentions for the property.

In Fall 2011, Davis Motel owner Linda Turner was sexually assaulted and murdered at the motel. As ownership changes hands now, some are worried that the motel, like others in North Utica, would house paroled sex offenders.

The new owner is now sharing his intentions.

It came as a sigh of relief from some local parents who worried that the new owners of the Davis Motel on Herkimer Road would accept Oneida County vouchers for homeless people, some of whom might be paroled sex offenders.

The new owners of the motel, Oneida Housing, say they have a new plan for the property - corporate efficiency apartments, targeting companies that need temporary housing for out of town workers who are here for things like training or special projects.

Area parent Rebecca Dingman says she is happy to hear that.

"Definitely, definitely," Dingman said. "And I would think the residents of the surrounding community here would be as well. That's huge, especially for the memory of Miss Turner."

Since the motel was shut down for more than a year, the zoning reverted back to residential. So the new owner needs a "use variance" in order to use it as a commercial property. There is a hearing regarding the matter at Utica City Hall on May 14.
