Copper thief strikes again at Canal Corporation

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A thief is risking their life to steal copper wire from a very dangerous place -- and taxpayers will get stuck paying tens of thousands of dollars to replace it.

For the third time since October, thieves have struck the  New York State Canal Corporation off of North Genesee Street. In the most recent incident, about 500 pounds of copper wiring from several dozen feet up was taken. Copper is currently going for around $3 a pound.

"It could easily kill somebody," said Lt. Steve Hauck of the Utica Police Department. "Whoever did it, either they got lucky or they knew what they were doing. But with that amount of amperage, it could easily kill you."

The copper will cost more than $15,000 to replace. There are bike and walking trails nearby.

Police ask anyone with information to call 223-3512.
