Cops: Fire at abandoned factory was set

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (AP/WNYT) - Police say someone set a fire that destroyed a former brush-making factory in a Mohawk Valley city and spread to nearby houses, forcing dozens of people from their homes.

But Amsterdam Police Det. Sgt. Owen Fuhs says the blaze in the abandoned building full of stored books hasn't been declared arson because investigators don't yet know who set the fire or why.

Officials say the fire was reported just before midnight Wednesday at the defunct Eddie Brush Co. factory. Amsterdam is about 30 miles northwest of Albany.

Fire Lt. John Paris says the fire spread to two nearby homes, heavily damaging one. Paris says about two dozen other homes have been evacuated, displacing about 50 people. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at a middle school.

No injuries have been reported.
